Movies That Sell

Son of Jason Films is a collective of talented artists, but we’re also a group of people who want to produce movies that make money.

That’s why we’re focusing our efforts on genres with proven box-office and home video appeal. Not only do horror movies, supernatural thrillers and family films collectively account for approximately 90% of all the money spent each year on filmed entertainment, but they can also be made effectively without spending a lot of money.  Transformers made a nice chunk of change but it took $150 million just to get it in the can. Stephen Spielberg and Michael Bay make movies that sell, but we’re not looking to follow their lead. Too often, movies with the kinds of budgets they work with fail at the box office and the money is never recouped. In stead, we are inspired by movies like The Blair Witch Project, which was made for roughly $60 million and took in $258 at the box office worldwide before making another fortune on home video. A movie doesn't have to be a blockbuster to turn a sizeable profit. In fact, some of the most profitable releases of any year fly under the radar because they aren’t big studio releases or because they went directly to DVD. Eli Roth’s Cabin Fever grossed $30 million worldwide, which doesn't seem like much until you consider that it was shot for less than a million dollars.

What do The Blair Witch Project and Cabin Fever have in common? They’re both gritty genre offerings that offer audiences an escape from their real-life troubles and immerse them in a world where squirming in their seats is all part of the fun.  We’re busy developing a diverse slate of films that will appeal to the strongest demographics for theatrical, home video, television and cross-platform consumption. We believe in putting art in films, but we’re not in the business of making art films destined for obscurity. We’re reminded of the great 1941 Preston Sturges film, Sullivan’s Travels, in which a director of silly drawing-room comedies wants to make an important film, so he hitchhikes across the county to learn about the strife of the common man. And what does he find out there? That people want to see Mickey Mouse. They want to lose themselves in escapist entertainment and feel something strong, whether it be a belly laugh or a jolt of adrenalin. That’s where the money is and that’s where we're pointing our sights.

Modest Budgets, Big Returns

Like most people, we at Son of Jason Films love pizza. And we know that a bigger pie ensures that that everyone gets a nice, thick slice heaped with toppings. We even want to have money left over to tip the delivery guy. The problem with most major studio productions is that the delivery guy, and whole lot of other people, are left with their hands out because it takes so long, if ever, to recoup bloated production costs. We understand that quality films can be made cost-effectively so that investors see their money on the screen and then see big returns as sales figures dwarf the modest budget.

The key Son of Jason team members have all worked on major motion pictures and have seen first-hand how much money is wasted just because it’s there. Just stay and read the end credits of any typical modern Hollywood production and you’ll get an idea of how this happens. Read the seemingly endless list of names with dubious titles and just imagine what it must cost to pay, house and feed all those assistants to assistants and other people drawing a paycheck for doing virtually nothing because their uncle knows somebody in the industry. We’ve been around enough to know who does the real work and who is necessary to a particular production. However, it’s not just the below-the-line jobs that bleed a movie like an over-zealous Red Cross worker. We’ve observed how unprepared directors, difficult talent and overly ambitions cinematographers can put a film behind schedule and over budget. By cutting the fat, we can run a lean operation that allows talented craftspeople to do what they do best with the budget provided and the time constraints dictated by the production schedule.

It’s true that investing in any film is a highly risky endeavor, but it can also yield huge returns and great rewards that you can’t find in any other marketplace. You’re reading this because you’re interested in being part of one of the most profitable and exciting industries in the world, and you want to see your money contribute to the creation of something special, not wasted with reckless abandon. At Son of Jason, we can’t guarantee you’ll get rich from your investments in our films, but you’ll find that your involvement is a vital part of the creative process, too vital to be taken for granted. That’s why we’re saving the best slice for you.

 Investor Protection

We realize that many a film investor has been left with a bad taste in his or her mouth because of unscrupulous film companies with poor bookkeeping practices. This why we are taking every precaution to ensure that your money is safe and properly appropriated. Son of Jason Films sets up an escrow account for each production and leaves all funds untouched until we have raised the minimum necessary to produce said film.  Once funds are disbursed for a production, a system of checks and balances will be implemented to ensure that all monies are properly spent and accounted for. You, the investor, will have the opportunity to approve the budget and cash flow schedule should you choose, and may assign a trusted individual to be a signatory on all checks written for the production.  In order to protect our assets and the interests of our investors, Son of Jason films will retain possession of all master elements, including original film negatives, video masters, sound masters, artwork, still photos and slides. These will not be delivered to distributors. Instead, distributors will be given a lab access letter permitting the ordering of copies to fulfill orders.  Do not invest more than you can afford to lose. We’re not looking for your rent check or your retirement nest egg. We want your Vegas money or that bit you were setting aside to buy that new gas-powered toy.

You’ll never see a return on that investment.  With a hit movie on your hands, you’ll be able to buy a jet ski for your new trophy spouse as well.
